Understanding Natural Ingredients in Skin Care - Beeswax

Today's skin care market can be really confusing.  In the scramble for headlines and sales we often forget that beauty and skin care are not new things.  Native communities from all over the world have used skin care products right back into the mists of time. These products were used in healing, moistening, protecting and toning.  There is no doubt that in the past people has a much greater knowledge of the resources in the natural world and used what was around them when looking after their skin.  This next series of blogs will talk about some of those simple natural ingredients and their value, something that is often missed in the very crowded skin care world today.

Beeswax
Beeswax  (Cera alba) has long been used as an antiseptic and for wound healing.  Beeswax is one of natures most powerful skin care resources. It has wonderfully emollient, soothing and softening properties and helps the skin retain moisture and as such is a powerful ingredient for natural skin care products.

Beeswax is secreted by honey bees for the creation of honeycombs.  Beeswax typically contains 10-15 percent paraffin carbohydrates, 36% esters of C16 to C36 fatty acids and about 15 percent cerotic acid, melissic acid and their homologues. It is a biologically active product, retaining  anti-bacterial properties and also contains some vitamin A.

Processing Beeswax for skincare

Cera Alba is the purified wax from the honeycomb of the bee (Apis mellifera), free from all other waxes.  The purification process is simple and chemical free!.  Mil All Natural Balms use golden yellow beeswax in many of our products.  In each case the beeswax is specially formulated with a range of 100% natural ingredients to create modern, effective and luxury skin care products based on 'old knowledge' from throughout the world.

Two such example of beeswax in these wonderful balms are -

Mil Béalghrá Lip Balms all use beeswax to moistens lips, help heal dry skin, to create a natural barrier and add subtle shine.   Also, as we all know, what is placed on your lips finds it way into your mouth, so it is important for us that the ingredients in our lip balms are natural and harmless.

Mil Spéirbhean Lavender, Chamomile and Geranium Body Balm uses a smaller percentage of beeswax than the lip balms, just enough to enhance its emollient effect which has wonderful softening properties when blended with unrefined shea butter and the other ingredients.  The blend of beeswax in this product is in no small way responsible for retention of the essential oils which are important active ingredients and also give the balm its gorgeous subtle scent.

Our Béalghrá lip balm range along with our Spéirbhean lavender, chamomile and geranium body balm for women. Also in the photo is our treat for feet, Cos Chaomh All Natural Foot Balm.
All these balms use wonderful golden yellow beeswax.
